It’s just over a week now to the Railsbank Open Banking API Hackathon (#OpenBankHack17) on 10 to 12 November, 2017 in London.

Hacker teams have entered from Oracle, as well as student teams from Birmingham based School for Code as well as the University of Hertfordshire. We have encouraged a mix of skilled professionals and students.

Our very own CTO Adam McGreggor will be keeping the developers in check and he’ll also be one of the judges. The other judges are Erica Young, Director, Anthemis Group; Richard Hall, Founder and CEO, CloudOrigin; Megan Caywood, Chief Platform Officer, Starling Bank; Gregoire Michael, Program Manager, Tech City UK; and, Alexa Fernandez, FinTech Partnerships, BBVA.

The 48-hour Hackathon is aimed at developers and future FinTech entrepreneurs, and is designed to create innovative banking services on the Railsbank Open Banking API.

The Hackathon challenges are based around:

  • building a challenger bank in a weekend;

  • taking compliance from the world of paper into the world of digital;

  • controlling a bank account via Alexa;

  • creating “innovative” banking product.

Railsbank co-founders Nigel Verdon and Clive Mitchell will host the event.

Nigel said: “If you’re keen to be creative and push the boundaries of what can be built using Open Banking APIs, and want to build the next generation of innovative banking and compliance services, and win cash prizes, then #OpenBankHack17 is for you.

“The #OpenBankHack17 is a 48 hour FinTech Hackathon where attendees will form teams and collaborate with mentors to create amazing solutions to challenges. Several FinTech legends will be attending, judging and mentoring.

“The Hackathon will bring together professionals, students, industry experts, and FinTech legends who are passionate about FinTech and building the future of financial services. So come along to find a cofounder, meet someone new, have fun!, or simply learn a new skill that stretches you beyond your usual day-to-day life.”

Skills Matter is the media partner to the event and lead sponsor. Founder Simon Lyon commented: "Very much looking forward to seeing developers demonstrating how quickly and easily global banking services can be accessed via the Railsbank API.

“It will be fascinating to see how easy it is show how compliance is maintained for client on-boarding, account opening, issuing credit and currency transactions."
